What Every Mother Wants to Hear

kitten 2We’ve been discussing getting a pet at our house.  Cat, dog, fish…rock.  The conversations have been going on for a while and we (the parents) are just not quite ready to pull the trigger on any big decisions.  So the other day we were driving home from church and I overheard the kids talking about getting a kitten.

Child 1: “Oh, kitties are so cute we have to get a cat!”

Child 2:”We can’t get a cat, mom is allergic.” <long pause>

Child 1 in a whispered conspiracy voice: “Let’s get a new mom.”

(I had to laugh!)

Beaver Day

beaverWhen you have twins it is interseting how they will back each other up.  Yesterday they were both going on and on about Beaver Day (Groudhogs Day).

“Are you sure it’s a beaver that sees it’s shawdow?”

“Yup!” they both agreed.  “Our teacher had a big black sheet of paper on the door and that was his cave.”

“The beaver cave?”

“Yup, the beaver comes out of his cave and sees his shawdow and now there’s 6 more weeks of winter.”

“Are you sure it wasn’t a groundhog?”

“Oh, yeah a groundhog!” they both agreed.

What a Glorious Opportunity Today

What a glorious opportunity it is today that school has been cancled…again…due to cold weather.  I was just thinking that I really don’t get enough time with all six kids at home, at once, all in the same square footage, with the lucky break that it is too cold for them to go out to play or go anywhere.  Days like these are few and far between (except for last Monday…and next Monday for grading day…and President’s day…and the last Fri of Feb. for conferences…and oh yeah that 18 day stint of winter break…).  I think we will spend some quality time bonding:

Joey-laundry

Johnny-bathrooms

Josh-his room

Lexi-floors

Cassie-play room

Callie-dishes

Ah yes, what a beautiful day!

You’ll Know Which Kid is Mine

undershirtMiddle School band concert tonight.  A week ago I asked my son if he had everything he needed (black pants, black shoes, white shirt).

“Yup!”

“You have a nice white shirt?”

“Yup!”

You know mother’s intuition?  It was created for a reason.  This morning I had him lay his things out so he would be ready to go.  That “nice white shirt” we talked about?  Oh yeah…white undershirt!

Anybody see that angry lady at Target today with the dress shirt in her cart…yeah, that was me.

9 Kids and a Plate of Fudge

fudgeSo there are 9 kids in my house right now (we’re on day 11 of Christmas break…not that I’m counting).  The kids have friends over and one of the friends’ moms brought over a plate of fudge.  So all the kids are downstairs (its a wonderful mix of no screaming and yet not so quiet that you know they’re up to something) and I am eating all the fudge.  This is a great way to end the year.  A house full of happyish kids and more chocolate per square inch than should be legal.

Cheers to Fudge and Family in 2014 (quite possibly in that order…this fudge is REALLY good!)

On the Stage

Lexi's Fourth Grade Family Breakfast Concert

Lexi’s Fourth Grade Family Breakfast Concert

Last Friday was the 4th grade Family Breakfast where all the fourth graders come in before school with their families, have breakfast and put on a short concert.  It is always super cute, they do it for every grade, and even though this was the sixteenth family breakfast I’ve been to (one for each kid, each year for the last 10 years or so) I had a good time.

Johnny is a thief in Oliver!

Then last weekend it was opening weekend for Oliver! the community theatre production that Johnny is in.  On opening night I volunteered to work backstage as “Kid Corraler” and keep the kids (about 30 of them) contained in the dressing room.  Always be cautious of volunteer jobs that have the most vacancies, like when the kids were in hockey and I volunteered for the late shift at the concession stands…thats the person that has to clean the whole place, including the popcorn maker before they can go home.  You live and learn.  This job was kind of like that…well not that bad actually.  I admit I had fun and it made it more enjoyable the next day when I got to watch the performance and see the kids in action.  They were amazing!  I was really proud of Johnny, so glad he’s found his niche.  Another thing I learned about the theatre, that I quickly remembered upon arriving and taking off my jacket, is that backstage people are encouraged to wear black.  The crew, the helpers, the other moms, all in black…me?…bright pink half-zip fleece…oh yeah!

"Go tell it on the mountain!"

“Go tell it on the mountain!”

The third performance was the 3,4,5 year-olds at Wednesday night church.  I remember when the girls performed a few years back and they took their name tags off and stuck them over their mouths…so proud.  This year they sang.  It was really cute.  It doesn’t get much better than a bunch of little kids singing, “Go tell it on the mountain!”

Josh does not have any shows coming up but he did just start taking guitar lessons.  He is eyeing a “Beetles” song book to work his way up to.  Or maybe a garage band.

Joey doesn’t have any shows coming up either but I did learn from him that apparently our living room is an open stage to his friends on Xbox Live while he is playing his games.  “So they can hear what I’m saying right now?”  “Yes!” the TV answered back.  I’m not sure I want to be on speaker phone to the world in my own home.

So that is the crew.  Gearing up for winter “break”…all sixteen days of it…not that I’m counting.

Christmas Crafts?

“Can I have the scissors?”  Cassie comes asks me while I’m eating my breakfast.  “Can I have some tape?” She asks a few minutes later.  I can tell she is busy at a project in the other room.  Based on her past track record with tape and scissors I’m a bit nervous, but I haven’t finished my Cheerios yet and quite frankly am still waking up.  I’m amazed by what a couple of five-year-olds can create with some paper, markers, and tape (and sometimes my dental floss).  We have been all fired-up about Christmas so I was sure Cassie was busy making a construction paper Christmas tree or bell-shaped ornament or cute reindeer.  But no, this is what I walked in on:

Minecraft Monsters

Minecraft Monsters

What mom wouldn’t be proud of these cute, little…”What are those honey?”

“The monsters, from X-Box, from Johnny’s game.”

Apparently these are from the Minecraft game, the game that has taken over our boys’ lives since being installed on our XBox over Thanksgiving break.  Apparently the game is having an effect on other family members as well?!?

Yes, I know, but I am the mom that had the girls in PINK car seats for the first year of their lives, so perhaps I am a little taken aback when their likes differ a bit from the preconceived ideas I had of having cute twin little girls.

Is is alright if the Minecraft Monsters are not displayed next to Christmas popcorn wreath we made last week?…Just asking?

Dalmatians at Thanksgiving?

Halloween 2013 2 003 - CopyThe other night we are all sitting around the dinner table and Cassie gets up, all of a sudden and disappears.  She comes back in a few minutes dressed in her Halloween costume, the dalmatian.  She goes about eating her dinner as if nothing happened.

The upside is we have definitely gotten our moneys worth out of Cassie’s costume.  The downside, she is still wearing it…EVERYWHERE!  Yes it’s cute, yes there’s really no harm being done, but what about Thanksgiving dinner?  Should the dalmatian be allowed at the Thanksgiving dinner table? (We are going out to eat this year with family.)

She hasn’t asked to wear it to school yet (Parenthood, Season 1, Max and the pirate costume?) and the dalmatian has not gone to Sunday School.

When it comes down to it, look at that picture, how can you say “No” to that cute puppy face…wait, maybe that’s her gig, maybe this is her new technique to persuade her parents to get whatever she wants?  Or maybe it is just a really cute phase and I will be longing for these days in ten years when my post may be “Noserings at Thanksgiving?”

Johnny’s Play

We went to the theatre this weekend…at the middle school.  Johnny was in the production of “Adventures of a Comic Book Artist”.  It was a really cute play about super heroes.  Johnny played one of the four super heroes that comes to life after the comic book artist uses a magical pen.  His character was Triple Time (a really fast guy).  If you know Johnny you know he got cast in the best possible role.

I am amazed at how they can throw together a performance with acting, singing, choreography the works in just a few weeks after school.  The kids did great!  Johnny was eating up the autograph session after the final show.  It was really fun.  Next up is Oliver for the Community Theatre.  Johnny is a thief!  They will be performing 8 shows so that will be a great experience.  Look out Hollywood!
